Linguistic-Literary Traditions (LiLet)
The Linguistic and Literary Traditions programme forms part of the broader PhD programme in Humanities and Social Sciences, which promotes the epistemological potential and the fundamental role of the humanities and social sciences in the contemporary world, integrating highly specialised training with a critical perspective aimed at identifying innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to understanding and managing the dynamics operating within cultural, social and institutional systems, in their mutual relationships and in their synchronic and diachronic phenomenology. Specific attention is paid to forms of textuality and to the practices of reading and interpreting sources, both traditional and digital.
In particular, the Linguistic and Literary Traditions curriculum aims to develop, for the linguistic areas represented – Italian, English, French, German and Spanish – interdisciplinary lines of research on broad themes such as:
linguistic and literary systems, their stratifications and intersections;
the typologies of textual, linguistic and performative productions in synchronic and diachronic contexts, including a focus on classical languages;
the evolution of discursive and literary genres, from a comparative and/or contrastive perspective, both from an inter- and transmedia perspective – with reference to participatory culture in the digital environment – and from a transnational perspective – with reference to phenomena of interculturality, multilingualism, border areas, diaspora and/or migration;
linguistic and literary history;
theories and practices of communication, translation, rhetoric and narrative;
poetics and stylistics;
methodologies for the analysis and interpretation of texts;
teaching methodologies and school education;
the processes of production, distribution, circulation and reception of texts from the perspective of mediation, both cultural and technological;
the production of differences from an intersectional perspective (of gender, sexuality, race, class, ethnicity, religion, etc.) and their reflection in the production of languages, texts and/or aesthetic models;
the question of humanity in relation to ecosystems and other species in literary imagination and language;
the concept of ‘ecology’ applied to linguistic, textual, disciplinary and cultural systems (biodiversity, sustainability and their possible applications and variations within linguistic and literary disciplines).
The PhD in Human and Social Sciences (SUSo) aims to train a new generation of experts with up-to-date specialist skills in their respective disciplinary fields, as well as equally up-to-date cross-disciplinary skills—in particular analytical and hermeneutic skills—which are fundamental for the critical interpretation of the contemporary world from socio-economic, institutional, cultural and environmental perspectives. Graduates will be equipped to work in international, national and local institutions, in public administration, in the Third Sector, in education and in private practice.
For the linguistic and literary curriculum (“Linguistic and Literary Traditions”), the skills acquired equip graduates for careers in research, education and training; in intercultural roles; in journalism; in text translation; in digital communication; and in international cultural promotion and organisation, including innovative sectors and contexts (such as Ageing and Medical Humanities) that require narrative, communicative and expressive skills.
